When we announced that we were going to put your questions to Katie Melua, well, we expected a good few emails. But nothing prepared us for the deluge of mail we received in the virtual Hotmail sack! Hundreds and hundreds of burning questions ~ from the well-trodden to the completely random, from relationship advice to proposals of marriage, you needed answers and you wouldn't rest until you got them.
Well,
we've sifted through them all and made up a shortlist that hopefully covers a lot of the most popular, as well as throwing in the odd curveball here and there, just for fun. Hopefully you won't be too disappointed if yours isn't featured this time, we might well do it again at some point...
So, on with the show. Ms Melua,
your public awaits...!
Ole-Anders Hegland ~
What is the favourite place to go when you shall relax?
These days I’m away so much I like to come back home with my family, if I have time, and particularly by the sea - I love being by the sea.
Geoffrey Hoin ~ Will you and Mike write all the songs or will other writers participate to the elaboration of your next album?
Yes I’d love to write with other people but I’ve always found co-writing difficult, I’d like to experiment and try more though.
Cetaele ~ How was the video "Nine Million Bicycles" made? How far did they drag you?
I was dragged on a slate that was shaped to my body which was pulled with a wire. They had three lanes that they dragged me on and in total it was about 80 metres!
Anita ~ Which music genre, like blues and jazz on your previous albums, is going to influence the songs of your new CD you’re going to record in 2007?
Its difficult to say as I haven’t been in the studio much yet. As the songs aren’t finished I can’t really say - sorry it’s taking so long I’m a huge fan of music myself and I hate it when artists take ages but I want to make it really good so I’m taking my time.
Mark Bishop ~ When you released Piece By Piece you said it came from 'a darker place' than Call Off The Search, reflecting your emotional state at the time. How are you feeling now, and how do you anticipate this influencing your next album?
I think my songwriting is always a little darker than Mike’s even if I’m going through happy times. I do always find music for me tends to express itself better when the subject is that of a sad one. But I always find everyone has something sad or dark even if we are happy and that sadness can always be channeled into emotion in songs.
James Ward ~ Does Katie like doing duets and if so who would she like to sing one with?
I find duets can be a little tricky sometimes but if I could I’d love to duet with Lisa Hannigan- who is on Damian Rice’s album - she has a stunning voice.
Frank ~ You seem to have reached your dream to be a successful musician. But what are the things you dream about now?
I feel like I have reached my dream in succeeding commercially, but musically I don’t feel I’ve achieved my music dream. I ’m very proud of what I’ve done but I still feel that I’m very much learning and at the beginning of my journey.
Deasy85 ~ What were the last 3 CD's that you listened to?
Damien Rice's 9- (I’ve reviewed it in my blog), The Feeling - love it and Portishead's Glory Box.
Frank de Brabander ~ Are there any special people for you, who you show your new songs to at first, to know their opinion about it?
My parents are good – they’re honest, and of course Mike.
Jamie Sward ~ Do you listen to any dance music? Would you ever consider letting some of your songs get remixed for the clubs--or lending your voice to a dance single?
It would depend on how it was done, I wouldn’t say my favourite genre is one which focuses on production, I tend to focus on melodies and lyrics although I wouldn’t rule out collaborating with a dance DJ if it was experimental and interesting, eg something electronic like Bjork or Moby’s stuff- both are amazing.
Jorge Moura ~ Do you feel more comfortable playing with a big Jazz band or when it's just you and a guitar?
Playing on your own is a lot more intimate and scary and you’re more vulnerable on stage but with a band, there’s a sense of comfort when you play with the band, it seems safer as they’re such good friends and we have such a laugh, but also for that same reason I do prefer playing on my own- it’s sometime good to feel vulnerable.
Wioul Brinner ~ Katie, how do you imagine yourself after 20 years?
I’ll be 42- who knows! Definitely haven’t thought that far ahead. I can’t see music not being in my life so I’d still love to write song, produce or manage or if my voice is still around hopefully singing.
Teddy Ann ~ I just wanted to know, which is your favorite song that you have recorded?
That’s tough! It’s difficult to say one, I always then think of another - I have favourites for different reasons. I suppose my favourite recording of a song would be Crawling Up A Hill because it was the first time that something magical happened between the band when we were jamming and we came up with a grove for that song. I didn’t really know the others at that point so it was a real first moment where everything just clicked between us.
Michael Hamberger ~ In an interview, you said, that you and Mike produce about 25 songs for every album, but in the end, there are only 12 songs on the album. What happens with those missing songs? Are they planned for a release in the future? Will they become one of your amazing, unbeatable b-sides?
Yes, they do tend to get on the b- sides or as extra tracks on album re-releases or they are just are played live- then there are the few that just aren’t meant to be heard!
Felix Dodds ~ If you were Secretary General of the UN what would the single thing you would do to ensure we lived in a better world
I think it would have to be something to do with the environment. I would try and get as many countries to change their policies on carbon emission- I think I’d probably make all the schools round the world show the Al Gore film and The Inconvenient Truth to every kid and every teenager.
Melodie ~ What do you do just before to come on stage ?
(do you stay alone and meditate ? do you check the last details , ect)
I generally hang with the band and sometimes I’ll play the guitar to warm up.
Anita ~ Which music genre like blues and jazz on your previous albums, is going to influence the songs of your new cd you’re going to record in 2007?
I think out of all the elements of music, genres are the most difficult for me to describe. I know I want more up-tempo tracks and I think I’d like the lyrics to be a bit more narrative than they have been before.
